One of the most quoted scriptures by both Christians and non-Christians is the text “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he” Proverbs 23:7 KJV.
Make no mistake about it. You are your thoughts. Your physical reality is a direct reflection of your thoughts. Your thoughts dictate your actions and your actions determine your results. So it is not wishful thinking to suggest that for you to change your life from what it is right now to where you want it to be, the first and foremost thing you must do for yourself is to change your thoughts. For you are a product of your thoughts. Your thoughts originate from your mind. There is only ONE MIND with three parts based on their functions. Conscious Mind, Subconscious Mind, and Superconscious Mind. The Superconscious Mind is sometimes referred to as the Infinite Mind, Universal Mind or God. The article focuses on changing your thoughts by working on your Conscious and Subconscious Mind.
The conscious mind is whatever one is consciously aware of. Your conscious mind is the mind which you use for thinking, feeling, judging, perceiving and processing all information received. But your conscious mind is not your brain. The keyword is awareness.
When you look at an object, your brain quickly goes through a database of stored information at a very high speed; and if the object is something that is already stored in your vast database, your brain identifies what the object is and give it meaning. For example, let’s say you walk past a stationary wheelbarrow, and you said quietly to yourself; “that’s a wheelbarrow”. Although you said it instantaneously but in reality what happened was that you use one of your sensory organs, which is your eyes in this instant, to first see the wheelbarrow, this information in the form of an image is then fed to your brain; which then process this image, identify what it is and give it meaning based on the information stored in the subconscious memory. Only after this can you say quietly inward “that’s a wheelbarrow”. Because this sequence of events happens at such astonishing speed, most people actually believe that they can identify an object by just looking at it. You can only see with your eyes. Your brain gives meaning to what you see. The same way your brain gives meaning to the other information supplied by your ears, tongue, nose, and skin.
No sensory organ has the ability to give any meaning to the information it’s collecting. So when someone says something like, “my nose tells me there is good food in this kitchen”. They are saying that out of total ignorance because their nose has no ability to interpret smells or give it meaning.
As stated earlier, “your conscious mind is the mind which you use for thinking, feeling, judging, perceiving and processing all information received. But your conscious mind is not your brain.” Although your conscious mind is not your brain, it relies on it. Some people define conscious mind as your brain in action or motion.
Your conscious mind is non-physical. If you dissect any dead person, you will never be able to find their mind because the mind is spiritual and invisible yet it defines who we are as a person. It determines how we think, feel, see things around us and our actions. Although the conscious mind determines how you think, feel, perceive things and make a judgement; it is only in charge of 5% of our actions. The other 95% of actions are controlled by our subconscious mind.
You will be forgiven for saying if our conscious mind is only in charge of 5% of our actions, why do we bother with it? Well, although the conscious mind is in charge of 5% of our actions, it is actually the gatekeeper to the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind doesn’t analyse, reason, judge or know if the information it’s getting is fictional, false or true. It relies entirely on the conscious mind to provide this filter.
The subconscious mind is the powerhouse within every one of us. This mind runs almost everything. From our bodily functions to our present-day reality. Have you ever been driving back from somewhere and you completely zone out but somehow you manage to drive perfectly without any mistake? That’s your subconscious mind at work. Have you ever set the alarm to wake you up at a particular time but somehow you manage to wake up 5 to 10 mins before the alarm goes off? That’s your subconscious mind at work.
Your subconscious mind literally runs everything about you while your conscious mind is just the gatekeeper of your subconscious mind. But since your subconscious mind cannot filter what is good or bad, or what is real or imagined, it works hand in hand with the conscious mind.
Your subconscious mind is a million times more powerful than your conscious mind and it is either working for you or against you. Remember I said earlier that your “subconscious don’t analyse, reason, judge or know if the information it’s getting is fictional, false or true. It relies entirely on the conscious mind to provide this filter.” Whatever your conscious mind accepts as true, your subconscious mind brings into reality. It is simple as this. And for your conscious mind to accept something as true, you either have to have faith in that particular thing or you fear that particular thing. Anything you have faith in or that you fear, always manifest itself in your life. This is the reason why whatever you fear will likely manifest. If you are afraid of a particular illness for whatever reason, it is very likely you would suffer that illness at some point in your life. There is a reason why the phrase “fear not” appeared in the bible for 365 times. It is specifically because whatever you fear will likely manifest. When you fear, what your conscious mind is doing, is that it’s telling your subconscious mind that this is “true”. That whatever is subject to the fear is true and real; even if this thing you are afraid of is simply imagined or purely fictional.
Although your subconscious mind is very powerful and runs your life and your reality; it is actually programmed. It was programmed by your environment with ideas, thoughts, images, and sound at a very young age. By the age of 4, the essentials parts of your subconscious programming are already completed. So by the time you actually start thinking for yourself, you will only entertain thoughts that are in harmony with your subconscious programming. This is why there are some thoughts you would never entertain because they are in conflict with your subconscious programming while the person sitting next to you have no problem entertaining such thought because it is in harmony with their subconscious programming.
Even though the subconscious mind can’t differentiate between good or bad, or between real and imagined, it still dictates to the conscious mind which thoughts and ideas it can entertain. The subconscious mind can go as far as making you ill just to stop you from entertaining an idea it believes is not in harmony with the current settings even if that idea is good for your wellbeing and progress. It does this because it is comfortable. You might not be, but it is. And because it is comfortable with your current reality it will not entertain anything that will disrupt that current reality even if the current reality is nothing but pain to you.
Your current life; no matter how good or bad it is, is completely based on your subconscious programming. Your subconscious dictates your actions and your actions determine your results. It is that simple. The good news is that your subconscious can be reprogrammed. Any change you make in your life that isn’t made at the subconscious level is nothing but a waste. Maybe the change lasts for a year or two, but give it a few years; the person soon returns to their former self. Lasting change can only occur at the subconscious level.
Your Reality is a Reflection
If you don’t believe anything written in the bible, believe this “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he” Proverbs 23:7 KJV. Your current reality is purely a reflection of your thoughts. It is an outward reflection of what is on the inside – mind.
For it is a scientific fact that your thoughts dictate your actions and your actions determine your results in life. So, really, change in the circumstances is completely dependent on your thoughts.
When you change your thought from pessimistic to positive, you will soon notice that the people in your life will change to people of the same mindset. When your thoughts change from focusing on lack to focusing on abundance, you will soon notice that somehow, you are living in abundance not because you can just wish for something and it will magically appear in your life but because your new way of thinking will influence your actions which will result in better result in your life.
To put it in the simplest form, thoughts dictate actions and actions determine results. So change thought, change the result.
So when you change your thoughts, your result will change to reflect this change of thought because your current life is simply a reflection. A reflection of your thought. It is practically impossible for you to change your thoughts and remain the same.
Knowing this, one might ask, how do I change my thoughts when am already programmed at a very young age to think in the way I think? Or how can I even change my thoughts when my subconscious mind would not allow me to accommodate thoughts that are not in harmony with my programming?
This leads us to the final section of this article; which is “How to Change Your Thoughts by Reprogramming Your Subconscious Mind.”
How to Change Your Thoughts by Reprogramming Your Subconscious Mind
Any change you make that is not made at the subconscious level is very temporal. A child who has repeatedly been told that he is good for nothing because he scores low grades at school might score good scores over one semester by doing his assignment on time and studying more, but this bump in his result is temporal because the way this child sees himself has not changed. Within a short period of time, that same boy will revert to scoring low scores. This is because deep down, this child has been programmed to believe he is “good for nothing child who would amount to nothing good” and whatever you believe at the subconscious level is your reality. Even when this child diligence results in good grades, he still doesn’t believe that it is really a result of his hard work. In fact, he might go as far as to pass the credit for the good grade to the teacher’s error.
This child sees himself in his mind’s eye as a “good for nothing child who would amount to nothing good”. Dr. Maxwell Maltz covered this in great detail in his book – Psycho-cybernetics.
This should be a warning to everyone; don’t destroy an innocent child future by uttering negative words. It’s OK to correct a child by telling them calmly how to do something in the right way but don’t plant destructive seeds (words) in their minds. If you haven’t got something good to say, my advice to you is to say nothing.
So how do we reprogram our subconscious mind? There 3 ways but I will talk about the two safe and effective ways here.
The fact is that you were programmed by repetition and you can be reprogrammed by repetition. You can call this “out with the old, in with the new”. Your subconscious operates based on patterns. These patterns are sometimes referred to the Paradigm. Paradigm is nothing but a multitude of habits. Based on your patterns, your result is actually predictable. Have you ever noticed some people who seem to have a habit of self-sabotage? I know, because I used to be one. Before I came in contact with teachings regarding subconscious programming and how our thoughts could either be working for us or against us, I will start a project, just when that project is about to be successful, I will give up on it or do something to sabotage it. I just didn’t know why I keep doing this to myself. It was heart wrecking. The reason for me being self-destructive was buried in my pattern, deep down in my subconscious. To work so hard and then destroy it yourself is one of the worse things anyone could do to themselves. But I was doing it repeatedly. I have seen others do the same if not worse in their relationships and businesses. Most still don’t know why they do that.
As the topic of this article stated, “Change your thoughts, change your life”. To change any area of your life, you must, first of all, recognize that you need help in that area of your life and change your thinking about that area of your life. They say the first step to salvation is recognition.
Take out four blank pieces of paper write Money at the top of one blank paper, Love at the top of another blank paper, Health at the top of another blank paper and Relationships at the top of the last blank paper. By the way, a relationship is different from love. Some people have the habit of referring to the relationship as love. You have a relationship with probably everyone and everything in your life but am quite sure you don’t love them all. Everything in life is based on relationship. You even have a relationship with your car or your garden whether you admit it or not. After this divide each of the blank paper into two with the heading “what am doing right” in one section and “what am doing wrong” in another section. So for example. Let say I wrote money at the top of the blank paper, I will draw a line down the middle and I will write, “What am doing right about money” in one section and “What am doing wrong about money” on the other section.
Take an audit of each of these areas of your life and be brutally honest with yourself. Most people have a perpetual health problem, why some people have a very destructive relationship with drugs and alcohol. Yours could be that you just can’t stay in a healthy relationship no matter how hard you try. Just write them all down. Don’t procrastinate. You might not want to because it feels uncomfortable. After all, no one really enjoys seeing their flaws. But still do it, or you might never change your life.
After you have written down what you are doing right or wrong in each of these areas of your life. Let say for the sake of this article; you noticed that none of your relationships has ever lasted more than 6 months. Ask yourself why is this? Are you deliberately getting involved with people who you know deep down you are not compatible with? Or is it because you grew up in a home when either mum or dad was never around and even when they are both around, they are always fighting? The question you must answer is how do you view love and relationships? Do you see it as an opportunity for the other person to look after you and take care of you? If the answer is yes, you must change your thinking regarding love and relationship. Because you must give love to get love. One of the instructions of Christ is that “give and shall be given unto you”. It is a universal law. No one can cheat it. You must change your thinking regarding anything for that thing to change. If you change the way you see a particular thing, that thing will change to match your new perspective of it.
If you do not take out anything away from reading this article, try as much to remember this, to get anything you desire, you must give it. I know it sounds crazy, but that’s just how it works.
To get love, give love. To get money, give and invest money. And if you don’t have any money, give your time and energy.
The main reasons for doing the exercise of writing out what you are doing right and wrong in different areas of your life is for you to identify your knowledge gap – for you to really zero in on the part that needs more work. Once you recognise the part that needs the most work when you start reading a book that deals with your issue, you will both consciously and subconsciously look out for the solution to rectify the problem.
After you have listed what you need to change in any of the four areas of your life, get a very good book that specialises in that particular area of your life. There are specialist books on love, money, health and well-being, and relationships.
Follow the instructions in these books. Reading it once will not have much effect. Even if it does, it will be temporal. Reading the book and applying the instructions in these books for a minimum of 20 times is the secret to becoming a success in that area of your life. So the secret is actually repetition. I will bet everything I have that if you pick up a book like “the science of getting rich” or “Think and grow rich” and read them 20 times, that you will surely be rich. It is an exact science. Before the 20th time, the instructions and advice will be buried deep down in your subconscious, that it will exterminate your old concept and ideas regarding money and replace them with beliefs and teachings of these books; which will result in you doing things completely different that will lead to you becoming rich.
But I must warn you that without ironclad determination, you will never be able to read a book 20 times. If you say you want to change your life, my question to you is how badly do you want it?
But if reading books and following instructions aren’t your thing, fear not my dear friend. There are teachers like Bob Proctor of Procter Gallagher Institute who have designed excellent programs to turn your life around completely. One of his most successful programs is his 13 months step by step program called “Turning your wishlist into Reality”. I advise you to check it out. You can visit his website here.
We live in a fast world. The world is getting smaller. Things are being done much quicker. You can be leaving your office and order food to be delivered to your home 10 minutes after you get home. I can be in Australia and make a phone call to someone in Iceland and the conversation will be as clear like the person is sitting right next to me. The distance of 9,437 miles or 15,185 kilometres between us becomes non-existent. What am trying to say is the everything is now done a lot quicker including subconscious reprogramming. Some people are a bit uncomfortable about being hypnotised, these people should stick to the repetition method in order to reprogram their subconscious mind. But for those who don’t mind being hypnotised in order to change there live to what they want it to be and don’t want to spend months doing it; then hypnotises is the way to go about it.
The leading name in this field is Jim Lutes of Jim Lutes International. With hypnotises, what would normally take months to accomplish could be done in minutes. Like I said earlier in this section, we live in a fast world. Take advantage of his service to turn your life around for the better.
If you have read this far, am quite sure you are really interested in changing your life. I wish you all the best.
