Look around you, everyone is afraid. Everyone you’ve come across in your life is afraid of something.
They could be afraid of becoming ill, injuring themselves, losing a love one, a relationship ending, getting sacked or being exposed as a fraud. But the fact is, everyone is afraid of something.
There is no such thing as a fearless person. So, being fearful of something is part of being human, and we shouldn’t be ashamed of this fact.
Out of all the fears that we humans have, the most common one is the fear of failure.
The fear of failure is so common that it’s the biggest destroyer of dreams and aspirations.
Many great inventions, aspirations, relationships, friendships and more, have been killed off before they even start because of the fear of failure.
A man sees a woman whom he is strongly attracted to, instinctively he knew he should approach her immediately and say a simple hello, but instead of doing that, his fear of failure kicks in and he starts analysing everything.
The more he analyses if he should approach the beautiful lady or not, the more excuses he comes up with as reasons why he shouldn’t approach. In the end, he didn’t approach, thereby letting his fear of failure to kill off any chance of him having a loving relationship with the woman he desires.
What about a young lady who had an idea of starting a new business, selling all kinds of sleeping-aids online?
At conception, the idea seemed great to her, but she starts analysing, she starts asking: What if people think it’s a stupid idea? What if my friends laugh at me? What if there are too many returns and chargebacks? What if the whole business fails and I lose all my life savings? Due to all these “what ifs?”, she never even started the business.
From these two examples above, you can see that people don’t have any problem when it comes to coming up with great ideas. Where the problem lies is in our built-in fear of failure. Although this built-in fear of failure shields us from a lot of heartache and pain, it also prevents us from achieving the success we desire.
Instead of fearing failure, accept it as part of life. Failing is part of success roadmap. You must embrace failure and see it as part of life if you truly want to achieve the things you desire. But what does it mean to embrace failure?
What does it mean to embrace failure? To embrace failure simply mean you have a proper understanding that failure is not final. It means accepting that every failed attempt is not failure but rather, it’s a lesson learnt on how to not to do it. It means having an understanding that failure is part of success.
There isn’t any useful invention anywhere that skipped it “failure phase.” Everything that we can regard as useful in our modern society was created as a result of trial and error.
The inventions you are enjoying right now came about because the inventors embrace failure and went after turning their ideas into reality. With this mindset, at every turn at which they met failure, it was simply a learning opportunity – an opportunity to learn something new.
When you embrace failure, you’ve reclaimed your power. You have permitted yourself to try and “fail”, and try again until success is achieved.
Again, embrace failure, because failure is part of success. Never avoid doing something because you’re afraid of failing.
Remember Winston Churchill quote at the beginning of this article, which is that, “success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.“
Failure is the path that leads you to success, so embrace it and work with it.
I have come to realise that there isn’t such thing as failure but rather, that every so-called “failure” are valuable lessons I wouldn’t have been able to learn in any other way.
So, in concluding, embrace failure because failures are necessary lessons which we must learn if we are to be truly successful.
