If you search for “How to become a better person” on the internet right now, you will find many articles covering this subject. Most of them will advise you to follow a 10, 12 or 15 steps plan.
The usual advice usually goes like this: (1) See yourself for who you are (2) Forgive and let go of anger (3) Accept responsibility (4) Admit when you are wrong and apologise (5) Set a goal for yourself and so forth.
These advice are great on their own but how many people actually live by them on a daily basis after reading them? The answer is probably none or a small percentage at best.
Reading an article on being a better person is one thing, internalising what you’ve read and making it a part of who you are is something completely different.
As the title already made clear, this article is about how you can become a better person. There isn’t any comprehensive list of advice which if you follow them all, will make you a better person.
The only thing you can do in your effort of becoming a better person is to embrace continuous learning. Continuous learning and the application of what you’ve learnt is the secret of becoming a better person.
On the subject of being a better person, the key phrase is transformation. Transformation cannot be attained if the individual did not renew his or her mind.
Transformation Through Renewal Of Mind
Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. – Romans 12:2 NIV.
How can anyone renew his or her mind? The answer is simple. You renew your mind by absorbing better and superior information. This is commonly done by reading books.
To renew your mind requires of you to embark on a personal program of continuous learning. So, you have to get all the self-help, motivational, spirituality, human relationships, interpersonal relationships and social skills books you can get your hands on.
Reading sci-Fiction, history, autobiography or documentary books will not renew your mind. You are what you eat and if you fill your mind with sci-fi books, you will spend your days daydreaming about fictional things. These won’t make you a better person.
If reading is not your strong point, then I will advise you to subscribe to Audible. Audible has thousands of books covering anything you can think of. If you can’t afford Audible, then you should download the Librivox app from Librivox.org.
Reading is one thing, application is something completely different. If you read 10 thousand books and you never apply anything you’ve read, then you are no better than someone who can’t read.
Knowledge is potential power, applied knowledge is power. In order to be transformed by what you have read, you must put everything you’ve read into practice.
Transformation by the renewal of the mind is achieved by the reading of transformational books and applying their messages to your life.
A New Mind, A New Person
When you look at someone, what you are seeing is a reflection of what’s on the person mind. The physical world is a world of “Effects“, the “Cause” is the mind.
If someone transforms their mind, their exterior world (physical world) must reflect these changes.
You cannot move on the inside and remain fixed on the outside.
You cannot achieve change and become a better person with the same old mind. That will never happen. You can only transform your physical world by the renewal of your mind.
When you transform your mind by the reading and application of the messages in transformational books as explained in the previous section, you will become a better person. There are no two ways about it.
Every human being is controlled by his or her mind and when you upgrade your mind, your actions will change and when your action change, your result will also change for the better. This is as simple as it gets.
When you saw the title of this article you might have been expecting to see some 10, 12 or 15 steps advice on how to become a better person, if this was your expectation, then am sorry to disappoint you.
Life doesn’t have an endpoint, you can never reach a point whereby you have learnt everything that needs to be learnt. Immediately you finished learning one thing, this is a whole new long list of things you need to learn, which is why I said that you must embark on a personal program of continuous learning.
A personal program of continuous learning and application of what you have learnt is how you transform yourself and become a better person but if you feel completely lost and just don’t know which books to start with, here are some books that I greatly recommend that you should read and follow the advice in them:
The books above will get you started on your journey of becoming a better person. Once you start reading these books, one thing that will become clear is that being a better person is not about following some 10, 12 or 15 advice, it’s a continuous thing which you must be completely committed to for the rest of your life.
