Will or willpower has been talked about in a lot of articles and self-development books. In fact, after reading some of the books dedicated to “Will“, one might start thinking it is some kind of special power. A kind of power you can only acquire by undergoing some form of rigorous training. This is a false idea of will or willpower.
Will is something internal. Not some external power one has to acquire. This is why I wrote an article called “Cultivation of Will“. This article explains in simple vocabulary how to cultivate will. To have a will is to have self-control. To conquer and rule over oneself. This is all there is to acquiring will.
So if you are reading this article I presume you already have “Will” but if you don’t, please quickly go and read Cultivation of Will article first. Because if you are reading an article about “How to Use your Will” and you don’t even have “Will or Willpower“, it is akin to me teaching you how to drive when you don’t even have access to any kind of motorised vehicle.
Having self-control over oneself or will is a vital step in anyone’s development. It sets the foundation for greater success in the future. Now you have will or willpower, how do you use it?
Using your will on your thoughts
Man is a product of his thoughts and an uncontrolled thought is a wasteful thought that wonders around aimlessly without achieving anything worthwhile. An uncontrolled thought always goes back to past events, both the good and the bad. It digs up unwanted memories and keeps replaying them over and over again. And if you don’t make any effort to stop this, these past bad memories will manifest in your life again in different forms.
Once you have willpower, the number one thing you must do with it is to use it to control your thoughts. Whatever you allow your thought to dwell on, that you will manifest more of. If you dwell on past failed romantic relationships, you will manifest relationships which are destined to fail from the very beginning. If you dwell on bad friends, guess what? The new friends which you’ve just made will become bad friends too.
Your thought must manifest whatever it is focusing on through the path of least resistance. And the path of least resistance will be an established means.
Since you have cultivated willpower, use it to direct and focus your thoughts on the things you want. Do you want love? Then focus on love. Do you want abundance? Think of yourself living in abundance. Do you want rewarding friendships? Then use your will to focus your thoughts on rewarding friendships. This is the primary use of your will. Using it to control your thoughts.
Using your will on your actions
If you have been successful in using your will to control your thoughts by thinking only about the things you want to think about, then using it on your actions should be easy. For man is a product of his thoughts.
The secondary use of your will is to use it to do only the things that you want to do. Whether or not the action performed is beneficial to you, is for you to decide. For what I regard as beneficial to my life, might be harmful to the person next to me.
You must use your will to do things that are beneficial to your personal growth. If you have decided not to smoke again, then it falls on you to use your willpower to exert control over your body demands for cigarettes.
You cannot use your will on anybody else apart from yourself.
Just like the quote by Marcus Aurelius said “You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” Your will is to be used on things that are under your control. These are your thoughts and actions.
Your will must be used to keep you focused, concentrated and determined to only do the things you want to do not the things suggested by your past weak character. I personally don’t think it is possible for anyone to completely destroy all of his or her past weak characteristics. There are always tiny remnants of the past in the dark corridors of the mind. And these small remnants don’t completely give up. They are always looking for an opportunity to come to the front and take over the person. Allowing them to take over you is called backsliding. Backsliding is a terrible thing for anyone seeking personal growth.
Whenever you are engaged in any demanding task, there will always be some part of you that will be suggesting and saying things like, give up, it doesn’t worth it, it won’t make a difference, it is probably a waste of time and resources, no one will notice or care and e.t.c. It will be up to you to use your will to keep your mind focused and concentrated on the task at hand and see it through to its completion. This is the secondary use of your will. To keep you focused, concentrated and determined to only do the things you want to do.
For a person to be in control of his or her life and destiny, he or she must first cultivate will and then use it for his or her personal growth and benefits.
Your will is only to be used on yourself and not on anyone else. You use it to primarily control your thoughts by only allowing thoughts that are beneficial to you in your mind. It is a scientific fact that a person thought determines their actions and their actions determine their results. So it is of vital importance for anyone seeking better life experience to exert control over his or her thoughts.
If one is successful in controlling of his thoughts, he or she will not find it difficult to use the same will on his or her actions. For anyone to truly be in control, he or she MUST only do the things the person wants to do. Not the things suggested by his or her weak indulgences or worse, by other people.
Only when someone can do the things the things he or she wants to do without being held back by their weak characters, only then is the person truly a master of his or herself.
In summary, the use of the will is to first exert control over our thoughts and then our actions. The exertion of control over oneself both internally and externally are the main uses of will or willpower.
