How many things have you said something in the line of “life is hard” or “life is full of struggle”? I know I have made these statements many times to myself. I uttered these words when am feeling down or when things ain’t going my way.
Most adults have come to the conclusion that life is all about experiences. These experiences come in the form of romantic relationships, friendships, social interactions and all other forms of humans transactions.
For reasons, I don’t quite understand, humans, somehow expect life to be smooth sailing. They work tirelessly to create a life of comfort that is trouble-free.
Life is not meant to be trouble-free. Nature has designed life so that every living species on earth must experience growth in one form or the other. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you see it, growth can only be attained through uncomfortable experiences.
Growth Through Discomfort
Do you know that if you only do things that you are sure of being successful at, that you will never grow or improve? Growth can only be attained through discomfort.
This discomfort can come in the form of physical or emotional pain or in the form of embarrassment but the fact is that without pain there will be no gain.
For example, if you go to the gym and you only lift dumbbells that are within your comfort zone, you will never get stronger or increase your muscle mass. Your muscles will only get bigger when you lift weights that are outside your comfort zone.
I encourage you to embrace pain because it’s through pain that you can attain growth and ultimate success in anything.
You can easily embrace pain by doing the following:
(I) Not caring about what others say or think about you.
(2) Giving yourself permission to fail.
(3) Giving yourself permission to embarrass yourself.
(4) Accepting that it is OK to fail.
(5) Knowing that an expert or a successful person is someone who has failed the most and learned from them all.
You Either Learn Or Succeed
Most people are sad or depressed because they are unhappy about something. This is obvious but what’s not so clear is the fact that, it’s the persons understanding of a situation that has created the sad or depressed feeling and not the actual event.
In Hamlet, William Shakespear wrote, “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” If you are sad right now, I want to assure that the reason for your unhappiness is not the event but your perception of what has happened.
If you can expand your awareness and perception of life to the point of neutrality, you would quickly come to the understanding that life is a game. And when you know that life is a game with no trophy or winning prize at the end of it, then you will understand that there are no failures. Just lessons.
Whatever that might have happened to you in the past which has made you feel like a failure or inadequate, don’t take it personally. Those experiences happened to let you know the areas of your life you need to work on. Those experiences are lessons and they will keep repeating themselves in your life until you’ve learned the necessary lesson you need to learn from them for your own personal growth.
This article is one of those articles everyone can relate to because it focuses on life experiences. Why do people say life is all about the journey? Because life doesn’t have an end.
Even if you don’t believe in the afterlife, you still have to accept the fact that life is all about the journey because the destination is death and that’s not something to look forward to for most people.
If the destination of life on earth is the death and destruction of the mortal body, then the only thing we have are the experiences. These experiences are called life journey.
You will NOT experience life if you stay in your comfort zone. If you restrict yourself to your familiar environments and the people you have known all your life, then you have not made your life a journey. In fact, you have made it a fixed and boring life at best. I personally consider stagnancy as death.
It’s all about the journey because there really isn’t any destination. You will keep failing and succeeding. You will continue to make mistakes and learn from them because that’s what life is all about. Forget about a perfect life of bliss where discomfort of any sort doesn’t exist. This is a fantasy that will never materialise.
As far as you exist in this reality, you will continue to experience comfort and discomfort in one form or the other. This is the law of this reality we are living in.
So embrace life and its imperfections. Make the mistakes and learn from them. Give yourself permission to fail because it’s through failure that success is attained. But most importantly, you should know that life is all about the good and bad experiences. Don’t be in a hurry to rush to your grave.
