We, humans, suffer from one common addiction and it seems no one is immune to this addiction. I like to call this particular addiction “being stuck in the past.” There is no one, I mean no one who you know now on a personal level who doesn’t from time to time regrets one past action or decisions or reminiscence about previous years of there life.
When this past action has something to do with love, we call it “the one that got away”. No matter what your past actions might have been, no matter how wonderful it might have been, no matter how glorious it might have been, I want to tell you that you should always be looking forward.
Look forward, for there lies your best life yet. You should always be looking forward because no matter how wonderful your memory might have remembered the past, it will still be inferior to what awaits you in the future but you will never be in a position to experience The Now or the future if you are constantly looking in the past.
Why People Are Stuck In The Past
Metaphysicians and psychologist have come to the conclusion that we are not our thoughts. In fact, in a lot of cases, our thought is actually working against us. This is probably why our minds like to go back in time to remind us of the good and bad things we’ve done. It replays the storyline or event so vividly that one might think it was actually using an HD camera to record.
Ask anyone what time of the day they remember past regretful events of their life most. You will be surprised to find out that 8 out every 10 remember past painful or shameful events during bedtime, especially just when they are ready to sleep.
Why is your mind bring up painful memories just when you are about to sleep? It’s because it’s the best time for recollection and it has to feed your ego. Yes, you read that right. Your mind brings up past events, especially the painful ones and the ones you are now regretting because your mind has to feed your ego. Your mind doesn’t really care much about you. What it cares about the most is feeding your ego.
Your ego, on the other hand, feeds on a lot of things but its favourite delicacies are (1) Victim mentality (2) Being the villain (3) Me against the world mentality (4) Superior mentality and (5) Regrets. Like I stated earlier, your ego feeds on a lot more but these five listed here are its favourite.
You are not your mind which is why what you perceive as bad is also perceived as good by someone else. If one thing can be perceived as both good or bad, it means the actual thing is neutral, it’s your thinking, your mind which interpreted the situation or thing as bad. The real you, on the other hand, dwells on the neutral plane, where everything is neither good nor bad.
So, you reminiscence about the past because your mind who is always working hand in hand with your ego is trying to work-up some sort emotion which the ego can feed on, and when you entertain such thought, you energies such experience thereby making it possible for it to repeat itself. These usually lead to a never-ending vicious cycle.
The reason why your ego and your mind are putting you through so much pain is something I will cover in another article but know this, you remembering your painful past is of no benefit to you.
Your mind reminds you of the past because it is its job to ensure that your ego is feed in one way or the other and a lot of times it achieves this by digging up the corpses of your past. If you remember a past event as a happy memory which is still going on, then carry on but if it’s filled with pain and regret, then you should definitely read my “What Are You Thinking About?” article.
Look Forward To Your Best Life Yet
No matter how good or bad your past might have been, I want to let you know that your future will surely be greater. Look forward, for there lie all the possibilities that await you.
The painful things that might have happened to you in the past were necessary lessons you needed to learn in order to grow and become the person you are today. Now you’ve learnt your lesson, all you have to do is to apply what you’ve learned to your own benefit. These lessons can be applied in business, friendship, romantic relationships and etc.
The strange thing I have noticed about human nature is that we humans only truly learn by experience and we learn quicker if the experience is painful. So, you haven’t really lost anything. Life only taught you a vital lesson which you can now use to your own advantage.
The lesson of the past is learnt, there is no reason for you to keep dwelling on it because whatever you give your attention to will eventually manifest. That’s the law of this reality we are in.
You’ve learnt your lesson, now take that knowledge and apply it to your day to day life and in all your dealings with your fellow human. And if possible share your knowledge and experience. Some people will even pay you to share your knowledge.
When you consider that now and in the future, you as a person will make a lot less mistake than you made 10 years ago, then you can begin to see that your best life is now and in the future. There is absolutely no valid reason to look back or dwell in the past.
Life is wonderful if you know the rules and play by it. One of life rules is that we must look forward. Life itself always looks forward which is why nothing stands still.
Animals, plants and even humans are constantly evolving into something better. Stop listening to anyone who’s saying that the world is going to the pits or to the devil. No, it is not. It wonderful becoming and evolving to something better.
If life had stood still for a just a little bit or spent its time looking backwards, we as race might still be stuck in the horse and carriage era but instead, we have evolved and increased our knowledge of the laws of this universe and this has led us to the invention of motor vehicles and now we even have flying cars.
Looking backwards is akin to sitting on the first car ever invented and be reminiscing about your favourite horse and carriage without knowing that the car you are sitting on has a thousand times more potentials in the future than your favourite horse and carriage (past) will ever have.
Look forward, for there lies your best life yet. Your past has done its job. All the potential for growth and life enjoyment lies in the now and the future, so look forward to the great things that will surely unfold in your life.
