We all have one habit or the other which we do not like. This is probably because we have noticed that this particular habit is not something we can be proud of. In most instances, we hide this particular habit or trait from everyone that knows us. This is normal because no one wants to be known for his or bad qualities.
When it comes to characteristics or traits we are not proud of, where most people go wrong is the when they try to repress such trait or feeling. Some people are incredibly good at repressing their true feeling or character. They repressed their feeling and character in the ignorance that repression is the same thing as reformation. Let me state it here clearly; repression is not reformation.
Repression is a carnal effort by an individual to “fix” his or her flaws from “the without” – external. He thinks that by using his willpower he can achieve the same result as reformation but sometimes the individual confuses repression with reformation. This is where the problem lies – The attempt by an individual to transform himself from his current state to a better state through the means of his physical strength.
Reformation is a spiritual reborn. It is a transformation that happens within the spiritual mind and self of the individual. It does not rely on any physical strength to do away with the old habits and traits. Christ spoke about reformation in John 3:5 when He said: Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
To achieve reformation is not something difficult. In fact, it is actually simple. Reformation of the spirit mind of an individual is achieved by:
- Acknowledgement of the bad trait.
- A decision by the individual to reform.
- Ask for help from a higher source – Infinite Mind.
- Believing that your prayer request for reformation in “the within” (Spirit Mind) has been answered.
Why Repression Always Fails
A lot of times I have seen people quit smoking only to return back to it 2, 3 or 4 years later. They tried to reform themselves from their smoking habit by using their willpower. Your willpower is one of your carnal mind strength. It has limits and expiration date. This is why an ex-smoker starts to smoke immediately he or she gets angry or intoxicated. Their smoking because their addiction to smoking never really left them. The smoking addiction was repressed and any time the person is not in full control of his or her mental state, the addiction comes out and manifest itself.
The problem with every ability you acquire with your carnal mind is that they are only great while you are in full control of your mental faculties. Once you are not in full control of yourself, every skill you acquire with the help of your carnal mind gives way to all the traits you’ve repressed. This is why people say “I wasn’t really myself when I did so, so and so thing“. What they mean by that is that their repressed character/trait came forth and took full control of them. But is the repressed trait a representation of them? It is not an accurate representation of the person but it’s definitely one of the characters of the individual.
What you must understand is that difficult and unpleasant situations does not put anything into anyone, they only reveal what’s already inside. A person who cheated on his or her partner and then claimed that it was because of alcohol is lying to himself or herself. The ability to cheat and deceive was already there before that person laid their hands on alcohol that day. The alcohol did not put infidelity inside the person. It only revealed it.
Reformation is something that takes places in your spiritual mind. The part of your mind that is connected to the Infinite Mind. It is a transformation of the spirit of the individual, and since the transformation took place in the spiritual mind of the person, the physical mind and self must obey its command.
When you are reformed, there would no need for you to be on your watch in terms of what you say or do. A reformed person has been reformed in his subconscious mind and since an individual is an expression of his or her subconscious mind, the reformed person actions will reflect their reformation. A person action is truest indicator of the real person.
When you are reformed from a particular bad trait, there will be no need for you to be watchful about returning to that bad trait, simply because, after your reformation, you will develop a strong dislike or hatred towards your former self and your bad trait(s). This is why they say in Christianity that a truly born again Christian will hate sin. And what is a sin? A sin is a mistake, a misjudgement.
So, if you have been trying for years to stop masturbating, getting drunk, quit smoking, control your anger, envying others, judging others, keeping malice, being unfaithful and e.t.c. I want to tell you that, your reason for struggling is due to the fact you ignorantly believe that you can make any progress by repressing your bad feelings, desires and traits. You need reformation and repression is not reformation.
In order to reform yourself from any bad trait, character, desire or feeling you must do as I have stated above in this article, but I will repeat it again here. Here are the steps again:
- Acknowledgement of the bad trait by the individual.
- A decision by the individual to reform.
- Ask for help from a higher source – Infinite Mind. [You must ask for help from the Infinite Mind].
- Believe by the individual that his or her prayer for reformation in “the within” (Spirit Mind) has been answered.
You must repeat step 3 and 4 until you know and you are convinced inwardly that your bad trait, character, desire or feeling is no longer there.
