Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.
– Isaiah 43:18 KJV
Have you noticed how you spend the majority of your alone time thinking about the past?
If you’re honest with yourself, you will admit that at least 80% of your alone time is spent dwelling on the past. Some of the event you reminiscence about are good, but the majority of them are not so good.
Humans, by their design, are thinking machine. We can’t stop thinking. It’s part of what makes us human. So, thinking on its own is not a bad thing but dwelling on the past, especially the unpleasant ones is a bad habit to indulge in.
You might be reading this and be wondering why remembering past events is such a bad thing, well, here’s why:
Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
– Luke 9:60 KJV
Your past events, be it great, small or bad, are like the dead. Leave them all in the past. Don’t spend your time trying to resuscitate the dead bodies of your past, for when you do this, you contaminate both your present and future with the disease of the past.
Dwelling on past is bad because, spiritually, doing so means you are going backwards, not only are you going backwards, you are giving life to dead situations and events, and since you’re the creator in your reality, when you give life to past events and situations, they will come to life to haunt your present and future.
Wherever you are in thought, that’s where you are in spirit, and wherever your spirit is, that’s the place you truly are.
So, by replaying the memories of your failed businesses, relationships and all of your other failures, you’re literally going back to the past, and asking for those events to replay themselves in your present and future.
The reason some negative things keeps happening to you over and over again is because you keep replaying them in your mind’s eye. If you want the bad events and situations in your life to stop, you MUST forget the past and live in the now.
Instead of thinking backwards, you must discipline yourself and use your will to ALWAYS live in the present. Always live in the now and think forward, never backward.
Think Forward
And the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:
– Exodus 14:15 KJV
God despises stagnancy and backwardness. No matter how bad your current situation is, God’s instruction is simple; Go Forward.
It doesn’t matter if people are coming to kill or destroy you, the instruction from the Most High is still; Go Forward.
You can’t go forward without thinking forward. A person who’s dwelling in the past or thinking backwards can not and will not think forward, and by dwelling in the past, he or she disobeys the instruction of God.
Always think forward, look to the future with bright hope and positive expectation of great things. When you live in the now and focus your thinking on a better future, then you will begin to see opportunities.
The Red Sea in your life won’t not part if you spend your time dwelling on the events in Egypt or worrying about the Chariots of Pharoah that’s coming for your life.
You must discipline your mind to always look and think forward, for there lies a better and more fulfilling reality.
The great inventions we now enjoy and take for granted were not invented by looking backwards, they are all the creation of forward-thinking minds. The inventors all asked themselves simple forward-looking questions, and from these forward-looking questions, they were able to come up with great inventions and solutions.
Conclusion
If you think back for the sake of remembering a piece of important information that affects your present, then that’s ok, but to dwell on your past mistakes, failures and pains is never good for you. Doing this harms your present and future.
Believe it or not, living in the now and only thinking forward requires a lot of discipline especially if you’ve always been in the habit of dwelling in the past.
So, if you struggle to live in the present and think forward optimistically, then the first thing you must do, is to develop your will and after developing your will, use it to discipline your mind to focus in the now and think forward.
When you think forward, you will only see opportunities and possibilities. These opportunities will not reveal themselves to you if you spend your time dwelling in the past.
A lot of relationships and businesses have failed because one of the people involved has the habit of dwelling in the past.
The Source made it clear that it’s only after we stop dwelling in the past, that He can make our current reality better. God can’t do anything new for you if you’ve filled the space in your life with past heartbreaks and failures.
Live in the now and think forward. By doing this, you create space for something positive to happen in your life right now.
Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.
Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
Isaiah 43:18-19 KJV
